CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

For the next four days, the Bastion was my home… a strange home with a mixed bag of roommates, sure, but a home, nonetheless.

Truthfully, I didn’t mind sleeping on the bed of furs I had been given. It made sense there wouldn’t be a real bed down in my quarters, anyway, given how narrow the staircase was. It did get dark down here, though, and there was a dripping sound I couldn’t find, no matter how hard I tried.

But I slept. I slept, and I rested, because that was a thing I needed now. Sleep, food, water. I had a physical, mortal body I needed to take care of. For a being that had never had to worry about such things before, this was an adjustment.

I wasn’t used to eating. I knew how to eat, and how to drink, but I didn’t know what anything tasted like, so I wasn’t sure if what we were being fed was good or not. It seemed good? But I didn’t really have anything to compare it to.

Aithen, I learned, was the angel who made sure the lights stayed on, as he liked to say. He did a little bit of everything. Cooking, administration, preparation. He took me under his wing, putting me to work quickly enough.

Yes, the Tyrant had ordered him to ensure I earned my keep, but if I was honest, I didn’t mind it; I kind of needed the routine.

My mornings would start with a wakeup call at the crack of dawn. Aithen would come to get me with breakfast—he called it bacon and eggs, and it was incredible—which we would eat together in my quarters. I got to talk to him during this time, got to know him a little bit. He had a kind, soothing way about him, which made a change from the mouth-breathers the Tyrant liked having nearby.

From him I learned more of what had happened to the angels since the Burn. He told me, while everyone fell, not everyone landed on Earth at the same time. In the early days of the Burn, angels tried to make sense of what had happened to them. They didn’t all arrive at the conclusion that God had passed, though, and that meant those early days were peaceful. Sad, but peaceful.

Soon after the first angels fell, an Oracle received a vision of her death. As the Oracle recounted their vision, every single Trumpet on Earth shrieked. The sound was heard around the world, a sound many believe to have been God’s own deathly wail.

This earth-shattering scream sent shards of pain through each earth-bound angel that was unlike anything they had ever felt. Peace quickly turned to chaos, angel turned on angel, and factions were born. Each of these factions built a Bastion, and from those Bastions they waged war against each other; loyalists, rebels, ravagers who wanted to burn down all they could.

By the time Aithen had reached Earth, the Tyrant had already erected his Bastion, and groups of angels were already at each other’s throats.
